Low Impact Hydropower Institute Commends Brookfield Renewable for Leading the U.S. in Low Impact Hydropower Certification
February 26, 2020 (Lexington, MA) - The Low Impact Hydropower Institute (LIHI) is proud to announce that Brookfield Renewable (Brookfield) owns and operates the largest number of Low Impact Certified hydropower facilities in the United States.
Brookfield, one of the world’s largest owners, operators and developers of renewable power, has long been a supporter of Low Impact hydropower, earning multiple LIHI certificates throughout the early 2000s. With the recent recertification of their School Street and Raquette projects on the Mohawk and Raquette rivers in New York and the addition of the newly certified Millinocket-Dolby development on the West Branch Penobscot River in Maine, Brookfield now holds 30 LIHI certifications covering 73 powerhouses and dams.
“LIHI is proud to see Brookfield’s continued commitment to producing hydropower that provides environmental, cultural and recreational benefits,” said Shannon Ames, executive director of LIHI. “For nearly two decades, Brookfield has committed 30 projects on 19 rivers in five states to our science-based, independently reviewed criteria.”
“In the past year alone, Brookfield has renewed their commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental stewardship by obtaining first-time certification for 10 projects and re-certifying four,” Ames continues. “Brookfield’s leadership demonstrates that Low Impact Certified hydropower is an attractive part of any green power portfolio.”
Brookfield’s hydropower portfolio in the United States, including its Low Impact Certified facilities, generates enough green power to annually electrify nearly 1.5 million homes. Brookfield’s vast portfolio of hydropower facilities in the U.S. supports states and businesses in advancing their renewable energy goals.
Brookfield exemplifies the dedication of the 61 certificate holders and over 150 certified projects to produce clean power while maintaining the surrounding environment in order to protect our natural wildlife and resources.
